Re. Rabid skunk bites man in Dollard (The Chronicle, Oct. 4)

Reprinted from: The Montreal Chronicle - October 24, 2006

The two men who pushed the skunk off the road should be commended for trying to save the animal’s life as well as for exercising caution when dealing with wildlife that appears to be sick. However, as the truck driver discovered, rabies is a disease that should be taken very seriously. Animals often don’t exhibit symptoms of rabies (unlike the skunk rolled up in a ball), which means the public should exercise caution when dealing with any wildlife, especially skunks, raccoons and bats that are more common carriers of rabies.
