Insulation Benefits of Insulation

Benefits of Insulation

Animals living in your roof, walls or attic can cause significant damage to your insulation. Contaminated insulation can be a major health hazard and greatly reduces the energy efficiency (R-value) of a building.

If you are considering insulating or re-insulating your house or business, there are many things to consider. The most common questions we get are:

  1. Can this insulation actually save me money? And if so, how much?
  2. What kind of insulation is environmentally and people friendly?
  3. What is the downside of keeping my current insulation?

What is Cellulose Insulation?

Cellulose insulation contains more than 85% recycled, natural cellulose fibre made from newsprint. It is injected with fire retardants and pest repellants to make it the safest and most environmentally friendly insulation available.

What is a Radiant Barrier?

A radiant barrier provides additional energy efficiency by reflecting heat out of the roof/attic in summer and preventing it from heating the interior space. The product we use (rFOIL™), creates an additional R-value between 7 and 15. Combined with cellulose insulation, this provides an extremely effective attic/roof insulation solution year-round. Ask one of our installation professionals to provide you with more information on this amazing product and answer any questions you have.

Keeps Things Warmer in Winter and Cooler in Summer

  • Cellulose insulation forms a perfect fit in your attic or roof, covering all the nooks and crannies. It also blocks air much better than fibreglass batts.

FACT: Improperly insulated attics are a major source of heat loss. 28% of heating loss in one storey and 17% of heating loss in two storey buildings can be eliminated with proper attic insulation.

  • It is the most efficient insulation on the market, dramatically better than loose-fill fibreglass.

FACT: The efficiency (measured as R-value per inch) of the most common insulations show how much better cellulose insulation is: fibreglass loose-fill: 2.5; fibreglass batts: 3.2; insulation board: 3.3; cellulose: 3.8.

  • Heating bills are going up due to the increased price of electricity, oil and natural gas.

FACT: You can lower your utility bills by 30-60% per year. This means you could pay back the cost of cellulose insulation in just two years and save a lot more on your energy bills after that.

Winter Performance of Cellulose Insulation

Fire Safety

  • Cellulose insulation is extremely fire retardant and is non-toxic when burned.

FACT: A study by the National Research Council of Canada showed a 22% to 55% increase in fire resistance versus a non-insulated structure. Unlike fibreglass, cellulose also greatly restricts the amount of oxygen available to feed a fire.

A Quieter Building

  • Because of the way it fills in spaces and the material it contains (i.e. paper product), cellulose provides excellent sound proofing.

Pest Resistant

  • Our cellulose insulation prevents the spread of insects like cockroaches, silverfish, earwigs, centipedes and ants.

Environmentally and People Friendly

  • Made from all-natural recycled materials, cellulose is a green product that diverts waste from landfill and does not introduce harmful chemicals to your home or business. It removes odours from the air and is mould and mildew resistant.

FACT: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified Fibrous Glass Wool (fibreglass batts) as a "possible human carcinogen". This warning appears on the product packaging.
